Note that some Nigerian Universities offer both courses (double-honor), while some universities offer either Electronics Engineering or Electrical Engineering.

Basically, the Universities in Nigeria have nearly the same O’level (WAEC, NECO, etc.) and JAMB UTME requirements for studying Electronics/Electrical Engineering. As a matter of fact, almost all engineering universities have the same admission requirements.

But it remains important to take note of the tiny differences before applying to JAMB.

Requirements for Studying Electrical/Electronics Engineering

‘O’ level subject combination (WAEC, NECO, etc.)

To be eligible for admission to study Electrical/Electronics Engineering, you must score at least 5 SSCE credit passes, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and one other science subject.

Therefore, the NABTEB, NECO or WAEC subject combination for Computer/Electronics Engineering is English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics.

The other science subject can be Geography, Biology, Metal Work, Wood Work, Basic Electricity, Technical Drawing, Agric Science, etc.

Your overall grade must not be below five credit passes in at most 2 sittings combined.

Special considerations for the O’level requirements

• The University of Ibadan requires 5 or 6 ‘O’ level credit passes at one or two sittings to include English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with one/two of the following: Biology/Agric Science, Further Mathematics, Technical. Drawing, Economics, Geography, Metal Work, and Wood Work.
• Lagos State University requires six credit passes in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, one Science subject and any other subject if you’re going to provide two sittings ‘O’ level results.
• RSUST – Same as in Civil Engineering.
• The University of Port Harcourt requires the fifth credit pass in any Science subject preferably Further Mathematics.
• UNN requires five O’ level credit passes to include, Physics, Chemistry Mathematics, in not more than two sittings.
• COOU and ESUTECH accept a pass in English Language.
• The University of Uyo – As in Computer Engineering
• Niger Delta University requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other subject in not more than two sittings.
• OSUSTECH requires a credit pass in Further Mathematics.
• The University of Agriculture, Makurdi requires five credits passes in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any two of English Language, Biology or Agricultural Science, Technical Drawing, Geography, and Economics. Also, candidates with NABTEB Federal Craft Certificate or WAEC (Technical) Credit passes in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry may be admitted at 100 Level if they meet other admission requirements. All candidates must have obtained at least a pass in English Language.
• Covenant University requires ‘O’ level five credit in English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics and either of Further Mathematics, Biology or Technical Drawing.
• NTNU accepts English Language, Mathematics and either Physics or Chemistry and any other two Science subjects.
• FUTA requires at least five credit passes in subjects which include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry at NOT more than two (2) sittings.
• BELLS University same as in Computer Engineering.
• NTNU accepts credit pass in Geography as the fifth Science subject.
• FUNAAB requires credit passes in English Language Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.
• FUTO accepts any other Science subjects as the fifth subject and not more than two sittings.
• FED-OYEEKITI requires five Credit Passes in SSCE (or its equivalent) including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and one Science or Social Science subject.
• The University of Nigeria, Nsukka requires five O’ level credit passes to include, Physics, Chemistry Mathematics, in not more than two sittings.
• The University of Jos requires a credit pass in Additional or Further Mathematics as the fifth subject.
• The university Lagos accepts Agricultural Science in lieu of Biology.
• MAUTY requires Physics, Chemistry and Biology /Technical Drawing/ Further Mathematics/ Geography/ Electrical installation & Maintenance Work/GSM maintenance/ Computer Studies and IT/ Basic Electricity/Electronics.

JAMB UTME subject combination

In addition to the compulsory Use Of English, the JAMB UTME subject combination for Electrical/Electronics Engineering is Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Special consideration for JAMB UTME subject combination

• Nile University accepts any three Science subjects
• OOU requires any three of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology/Agricultural Science.

Direct Entry Requirement

If you wish to study Electrical/Electronics Engineering through Direct Entry, it is imperative to score two ‘A’ level passes or equivalent in any of Physics, Chemistry or Mathematics.

Special considerations and waivers for Direct Entry Students

• The University of Nigeria, Nsukka accepts
  • HND/ND/NCE in relevant fields
  • Complete pass in Intermediate ICAN examination or equivalents
  • Pass in final exams of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries.
• Niger Delta University accepts
  • At least three (3) ‘A’ level passes at GCE or its equivalent in Physics, Mathematics/Further Mathematics and Chemistry and Five (5) credit level passes at SSCE/NECO/GCE ‘O’ level including English Language, Mathematics/Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, Admission should be to 200 level of study in a five year degree programme.
  • National Diploma (ND) or Higher National Diploma (HND) at Upper Credit and above, in the relevant discipline from an approved Polytechnic or related Institution. ND holders shall be admitted to the 200 level or study in a five year degree programme while HND holders shall be admitted to 300 level. In addition to the above, candidates must have five (5) SCCE/NECO/GCE ‘O’ level credit passes, including English Language, Mathematics/Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
• The University of Ibadan accepts 2 ‘A’ level passes in Physics and Mathematics plus UTME requirements. Accepts also ND/HND at upper credit level {65%} accepted to 200/300 levels respectively plus UTME requirements. Knowledge of Further Mathematics is an advantage for all Engineering Courses.
• Rivers State University of Science and Technology – the same requirement as in Civil Engineering
• CALABAR and LASU accept ND/HND upper credits in relevant fields for a four-year programme
• FUTMINNA accepts ND/HND with lower credit in relevant fields plus five credit passes in Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry and one other science subject.
• ABU accepts:
  • ‘A’ level/IJMB passes in Mathematics and Physics.
  • ND/HND in Elect Eng. Upper/Lower credit with Distinction in Mathematics respectively.
• The University of Port Harcourt – No Direct Entry.
• The University of Abuja accepts HND (Lower Credit) or ND ( Upper Credit) in Electrical Engineering from Accredited Institutions plus UTME requirements into 200 level (i) PHC and NDU – No Direct Entry.
• ABUAD requires three A’ level passes in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
• CRUTECH – same as in Civil Engineering (iii) UNIZIK accepts 1st Degree in relevant fields (iv) BAUCHI, AAU, and LAUTECH do not accept P.7 in English Language (v) UMUDIKE and OOU accept ND/HND into appropriate levels plus UTME requirements.
• Nile University accepts any two A’ level passes in Science subjects, ND/HND (lower credit) or NCE (merit) in relevant fields.
• The University of Uyo accepts ND /HND in relevant fields plus UTME requirements.
• MAUTY accepts:
  • GCE `A’ level passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
  • Upper credit in ND (Electrical/Electronics Engineering)
  • HND (Electrical/Electronics Engineering)
• OAU accepts ND/HND passed at upper credit.
• COOU accepts ND/HND/lower credit in Electrical /Electronics Engineering.
• EKSU accepts candidates with ND in Electrical Engineering (Upper credit) and HND (Lower credit) in Electrical Engineering.
• FUTA accepts ND (Upper Credit) or equivalent professional qualification in Electrical and Electronics Engineering or related discipline or ) Good passes at the Advanced Level of General Certificate of Education or its equivalent in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
• ESUTECH and BAUCHI accept ND and HND in relevant field with UTME requirements.
• The University of Benin – in addition to UTME requirements requires:
  • First Degree Second Class Lower in the Sciences or Agric; Degree in Medicine, Dentistry or Pharmacy and PTI HND (Lower Credit) / ND (Upper Credit).
  • HND (Upper credit) in Engineering/Technology and PTI (HND (Upper credit) into 300 levels.
  • ND/HND holders should have ‘A’ grade in Mathematics.
• UNILAG accepts:
  • Very good passes in three (3) JUPEB/A-LEVEL subjects: Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry.
  • HND/ND (Distinction) in related Engineering Course.
  • Candidate must satisfy the O/Level requirement .
• NDU, MAKURDI and FUNAAB – Same as in Agricultural Engineering.
• LAUTECH accepts
  • GCE ‘A’ Level Passes in Pure Mathematics, Physics, Applied Mathematics or Chemistry.
  • ND with Upper Credit/ HND in Computer Science, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (plus UTME requirements) may be considered for admission into 200 level.
• FUTA accepts ND at Upper Credit level or other equivalent professional qualification in the relevant discipline or Good passes at the Advanced Level of General Certificate of Education or its equivalent in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
• UNIOSUN accepts ND (lower credit) in Electrical/Electronics.
• BELLS same as in Computer Engineering.
• The University of Ibadan same as in Agric & Environmental Engineering.
• The University of Ilorin – Same as Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering. Relevant Discipline include: Electrical and/or Electronics Engineering Technology, Computer Technology, Telecommunications or Communication Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Biomedical Engineering.
• FED-OYEEKITI – Same as in Mechanical Engineering.
• FUNAAB accepts GCE `A’ Level credit passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry or equivalent. It accepts ND (Upper Credit) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or relevant disciplines.
• NDA requires the other Science subject from Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics, Biology and Geography.
• UNN – Same as in Agricultural and Bioresources Engineering.
• The University of Jos requires ‘A’ level or IJMB passes in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. It also accepts ND (credit level) in Electrical/Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering or a closely related discipline from a recognised institution may be considered provided the candidate has credit pass in Mathematics at O’ level.
• FUTO requires at least two ‘A’ Level passes not below Grade C in Mathematics and Physics or Chemistry. It also accepts ND/HND (Upper Credit) in Engineering. Candidates must, in addition, meet UTME ‘O’ Level requirements. It does not accept First Degree or NCE.

JAMB cut off mark for Electrical/Electronics Engineering

Most Nigerian Universities allow students to partake in their Post UTME for Electrical/Electronics Engineering if they score at least 180 in the JAMB UTME.

We advise you to score way higher than that in order to stand a good chance of gaining admission.
