The JAMB 2020 registration has recently commenced. Unsurprisingly, many interested applicants have been asking numerous questions.
Many among those questions have to do with all the requirements for successfully registering for JAMB 2020.
One of the most common questions we’ve been asked recently is ‘is NIN compulsory for JAMB registration?’
As most people already know by now, NIN stands for National Identification Number.
People who have successfully enrolled for their National Identity Card at NIMC will get a NIN, which can serve as a means of identification anywhere.
Is NIN compulsory for JAMB 2020 registration?
For now, JAMB has retracted its demand for NIN. In other words, it is no more compulsory.
But why demand NIN in the first place?
Due to the pressing need to curb the rate of impersonations in UTME exams, JAMB decided to make NIN compulsory. However, it became unviable due to the fact that many UTME applicants reside in remote areas where accessing NIMC offices is somewhat difficult.
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation made this known via its official Twitter handle.
“NIN is suspended for 2020 registration. Candidates are to only send their names to 55019 to create [their] profile. No need for NIN for 2020 registration”, the exam body posted.

What about in the future?
Although JAMB has cooled off on its demand for NIN for 2020 registration, we expect it to be made compulsory again in the nearest future.
Therefore, it is advisable to register for it as soon as possible, so as to avoid unnecessary delays.
