This article contains the JAMB and WAEC subject combinations for Computer Engineering. Furthermore, you’ll find answers to some of the frequently asked questions regarding obtaining a degree in Computer Engineering.
Basically, the Universities in Nigeria have virtually the same O’level (WAEC, NECO, etc.) and JAMB UTME requirements for studying Computer Engineering. In fact, all engineering courses have nearly the same admission requirements.
However, you must take note of the little differences before applying.

Requirements for Studying Computer Engineering
‘O’ level subject combination (WAEC, NECO, etc.)
To be eligible for admission to study Computer Engineering, you need to score at least 5 SSCE credit passes, which must include English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Further Mathematics.
That means the compulsory NABTEB, NECO or WAEC subjects for Computer Engineering are English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and Further Mathematics.
Your overall grade must not be below five credit passes in at most 2 sittings combined.
Note that some universities offer waivers, so keep reading to find out.

Special considerations for the O’level requirements
- RSUST and UMUDIKE – Same as in Civil Engineering.
- ABUAD and OOU accept any Science Subject in lieu of Further Mathematics.
- ESUTECH requires a credit pass in English Language and all other relevant subjects
- The University of Lagos – Same as in Chemical Engineering.
- NTNU accepts English Language, Mathematics and either Physics or Chemistry and any other two Science subjects.
- MINNA and BELLS require five SSCE Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and any other Science subject.
- FED-OYEEKITI requires five SSCE Credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and one Science or social science subject.
JAMB UTME subject combination
In addition to the compulsory Use Of English, candidates who wish to study Computer Engineering must register for Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
Special consideration for JAMB UTME subject combination
- NTNU accepts any three Science subjects.
- OOU requires any three of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology/Agricultural Science.
Direct Entry Requirement
If you wish to study Computer Engineering through Direct Entry, then, you must score ‘A’ level passes or equivalent in Physics, Chemistry & Mathematics.
Special considerations and waivers for Direct Entry Students
- The University of Uyo accepts ND /HND in relevant fields plus UTME requirements.
- Benson Idahosa University and UMUDIKE accept ND/HND (Upper credit) with at least B average in Mathematics plus UTME requirements.
- The University of Benin, ABUAD and LAGOS – Same as in Chemical Engineering.
- OOU accepts ND/HND in Computer Science, upper/lower credits respectively.
- MAIDUGURI and BENIN – As in Chemical Engineering.
- Benson Idahosa University does not accept NCE.
- RSUST – Same as in Civil Engineering.
- OAU accepts ND Computer Science (Upper Credit)
- Bells accepts
- Two A’ Level passes from Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
- ND/HND (Upper Credit respectively) in Computer Engineering, or Electrical/Electronic Engineering
- FED-OYEEKITI requires two A’ Level passes from Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
- NTNU accepts any two A’ level passes in Science subjects, ND/HND (lower credit) or NCE (merit) in relevant fields
- The University Ilorin – Same as Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering. Relevant Discipline include: Computer Technology, Telecommunications or Communication Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, Electrical and/or Electronics Engineering Technology, Instrumentation Engineering, Biomedical Engineering.
