How to Check MTN Phone Number in Nigeria

Published on

Recently someone sent me a message asking “what is the code for checking MTN phone number?”

I’m certain you’re here for that same reason. Don’t worry, you’ll soon find the answer you seek. In this post I’ll explain several easy steps you can follow to check your MTN phone number.

MTN is one of the most popular mobile network providers in Nigeria, boasting millions of customers who use their lines to perform one function or the other.

Generally, all networks in Nigeria provide their customers with 11-digit mobile numbers. For many, it’s not difficult at all to memorize it.

But, thing is, if you use several mobile numbers from multiple network providers like me, you may at some point forget one of them.

ways to check MTN phone number anytime

Method 1. Using code

  • Dial *123# using the MTN SIM card you forgot the phone number for
  • Press 1 for account info
  • Press 1 again for “My Number”.

Alternatively, dial *123*1*1# or *663#.

After completing the steps above the network will immediately send you a message with the format: Y’ello! Your mobile number is 2348***********

The MTN phone number checking code above is absolutely free of charge. In other words, you don’t have to pay a dime for making use of the service.

Although method 1 is totally easy and reliable, we know some people would still love to explore other options.

Method 2. Send call me SMS

To use this method, there must be someone around you who uses MTN. Let’s assume you don’t have airtime on your line to call that person and through that see your own cell number.

  • Dial *133# on your own phone
  • Enter your friend’s phone number (one that’s close by) and confirm your “call me back” request.
  • Check your friend’s phone to see the message that he/she receives.

Your phone number will be displayed along with the message requesting for call back.

Also, this method is absolutely free of charge.

Method 2. Call customer care

In the event that you forget the code for executing the first two methods above, another way to check your phone number is by calling MTN customer care.

  • On your MTN line dial 180
  • Dial 9 to return to the main menu
  • Press 6 “for support”
  • Press the option that says “speak with a customer care representative”.
  • Wait for the call to connect and when it does, tell the customer care representative attending to you that you need them to tell you your phone number.

I advise you get a pen and paper to write down the phone number as the customer care representative calls it out.

Actually, in most cases they will send you a message — immediately after the call — that will contain your 11-digit MTN phone number.
