JAMB & WAEC Subject Combination for Mechanical Engineering

For most universities, the O’level (WAEC, NECO, etc.) and JAMB UTME requirements for studying Mechanical Engineering are similar.

Notwithstanding, it remains imperative to be aware of the little differences before completing your JAMB registration.

Requirements for Studying Mechanical Engineering

‘O’ level subject combination (WAEC, NECO, etc.)

To be eligible for admission to study Mechanical Engineering, you must score at least 5 SSCE credit passes, which must include Chemistry, English Language, Mathematics, Physics, and any other science subject.

To put it differently, the NABTEB, NECO or WAEC subject combination for Mechanical Engineering is English Language, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and any other science subject.

Read special consideration to know whether your intended school offers waivers.

Take note that your overall grade must not be below five credits in at most 2 sittings combined.

Special considerations for the O’level requirements

  • The University of MAIDUGURI accepts a pass in English Language.
  • For the University of Uyo, Mechanical Engineering has the same requirements as Computer Engineering.
  • FUTO, FUNAAB, UNILORIN, and UNN has the same requirements for both Mechanical and Agricultural Engineering.
  • Niger Delta University requires five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other subject in not more than two sittings.
  • The University of Jos, OSUSTECH and UNILAG require a credit pass in Further Mathematics.
  • ESUTECH requires a credit pass in English Language and other relevant subjects.
  • UMUDIKE – Same as Civil Engineering
  • BELLS same as Computer Engineering
  • LASU as for two sittings, requires six credit passes in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, English Language, one Science subject and any other subject.
  • RSUST accepts further Mathematics in lieu of Mathematics and requires Agricultural Science or Biology as the fifth subject.
  • UNIBADAN requires 5 or 6 ‘O’ level credit passes at one or two sittings to include English Language, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics with one/two of the following: Biology/ Agric Science, Further Mathematics, Technical. Drawing, Economics, Geography, Metal Work, and Wood Work.
  • FED-OYEEKITI requires five Credit Passes in SSCE (or its equivalent) including English Language, Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry and one Science or Social Science subject.
  • FUNAAB requires a credit pass in Biology.
  • UNN requires five O’ level credit passes to include, Physics, Chemistry Mathematics, in not more than two sittings.
  • BAUCHI accepts Agricultural Science in lieu of Biology.
  • The University of Lagos – Same as in Chemical Engineering.
  • MAUTY requires Physics, Chemistry and Biology/ Agric. Science, Geography/Further Mathematics/Technical Drawing/ Welding, and fabrication Engineering craft practice.

JAMB UTME subject combination

In addition to the compulsory Use Of English, the JAMB subject combination for Mechanical Engineering is Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

Special consideration for JAMB UTME subject combination

OOU requires any three of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Biology/Agricultural Science.

Direct Entry Requirement

Candidates who want to apply for Direct Entry admission into Mechanical Engineering need at least two ‘A’ level passes or Equivalent in Physics & Mathematics.

Special considerations and waivers for Direct Entry Students

  • ABUAD, CRUTECH, RSUST, IGBINEDION, EKSU, and MINNA – same as in Civil Engineering.
  • NDU, MAKURDI, and UNN – same as in Agric Engineering.
  • The Unversity of Benin accepts HND (lower credit) and ND (upper credit) plus UTME requirements.
  • OAU, BAYERO, and FUTA – do not accept NCE (Technical).
  • The University of Uyo accepts ND /HND in relevant fields plus UTME requirements.
  • UMUDIKE and LAUTECH accept ND/HND upper credit level into 200 and 300 levels respectively.
  • FUTO requires at least two ‘A’ Level passes not below Grade C in any of Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry. It also accepts ND/HND (Upper Credit) in relevant fields into 200 or 300 levels respectively. Candidates must, in addition, meet UTME ‘O’ Level requirements. It does not accept the First Degree or NCE.
  • FUTMINNA accepts ND/HND lower credits in relevant courses.
  • COOU accepts ND/HND(lower credit) in Mech. Eng. and at least a pass in English Language.
  • MAUTY accepts:
    • GCE `A’ level passes in the relevant subjects with at least three credits passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry
    • ND/HND with a minimum of lower credit in relevant Course.
    • IJMB 7 points minimum in English, Physics, Chemistry/Mathematics.
  • OOU accepts ND/HND in relevant field.
  • CARITAS, PHC and NDU – No Direct Entry.
  • FUTA accepts GCE ‘A’ level passes at one sitting in at least two of the following subjects, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics in addition to the ‘O’ level requirement
  • ESUTECH does not accept lower credit for Direct Entry
  • LAGOS accepts:
    • Very good passes in three (3) JUPEB/A-LEVEL subjects: Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry.
    • HND/ND (Distinction) in related Engineering Course.
    • Candidate must satisfy the O/Level requirement , LAUTECH, and BENIN – Same as in Chemical Engineering.
  • FUTA accepts ND at Upper Credit level or other professional qualification in the relevant discipline in addition to the O’ level requirements or GCE ‘A’ level passes at one sitting in at least two of the following subjects, Chemistry, Physics and Math in addition to the ‘O’ level requirements.
  • OAU admits ND/HND in Mechanical Engineering (Upper Credit) to Part II and III appropriately
  • ABU accepts:
    • Two ‘A’ level/IJAMB passes from Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.
    • ND upper credit, NCE technical and HND Lower Credit in Mech. Engineering.
  • BELLS accepts
    • Two A’ Level passes in Mathematics, Physics / Chemistry.
    • ND/HND (Upper Credit respectively) in Mechanical Engineering.
  • UNIBADAN accepts 2 ‘A’ level passes in Physics and Mathematics plus UTME requirements. Accepts also ND/HND at upper credit level {65%} accepted to 200/300 levels respectively plus UTME requirements. Knowledge of Further Mathematics is an advantage for all Engineering Courses.
  • LASU accepts
    • ND (Distinction) or HND (Upper credit) into 200 level.
    • HND (Distinction) into 300 level.
  • ABUAD requires three A’ level passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.
  • FUNAAB accepts GCE `A’ Level credit passes in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry or equivalent. FUNAAB accepts ND (Upper Credit) in Mechanical Engineering or relevant disciplines.
  • Nigerian Defence Academy requires the other Science subject from Technical Drawing, Further Mathematics, Biology, and Geography.
  • LAUTECH accepts Agric. Science in lieu of Biology.
  • UNN accepts
    • HND/ND/NCE in relevant fields
    • Complete pass in Intermediate ICAN examination or equivalents
    • Pass in final exams of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries
  • UNIJOS requires two A’ passes in Mathematics and Physics. It also accepts ND (credit) in Mechanical Engineering in addition to O’ level credit in Mathematics.
  • ABUJA accepts HND (Lower Credit) or ND ( Upper Credit ) in Mechanical Engineering from Accredited Institutions plus UTME requirements into 200 level.
  • UNILORIN accepts
    • First Degree from Physical Sciences at Second Class Lower Division may be admitted into 200 Level.
    • HND in relevant Engineering discipline at Distinction or Upper Credits level from recognized Polytechnic or College of Technology after NYSC may be considered for upgrading to 300 Level.
    • First Degree Honours in Engineering discipline may be admitted into 300 Level of any other Engineering programme. Relevant Disciplines include Biomedical Engineering and Materials & Metallurgical Engineering. Agricultural Engineering.

JAMB cut off mark for Mechanical Engineering

Generally, Nigerian Universities allow students to partake in their Post UTME for Mechanical Engineering if they score at least 180 in the JAMB UTME.
